Dr Jonanas Tusiimire

Dr Tusiimire is the team leader of BioInnovate Africa supported project on malaria treatment through biobased supplements to artemisinin-based combination therapy. He is a pharmacist and researcher, currently serving as vice president of both the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU) and the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA). He is also a senior lecturer in the department of pharmacy at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and serves as deputy dean of the faculty of medicine. His teaching and research interests are in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, and pharmaceutical analysis. He has expertise in chemical compound isolation and purification, structural characterization by spectroscopic, chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques.

Dr Tusiimire has acquired experience and published works involving biological assays, toxicity testing, analytical method development, and metabolomics. His current research focuses on investigating capacity and quality assurance mechanisms for increased local production and appropriate use of essential medicines in Uganda and mitigating the current scourge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

He is a commonwealth scholar and holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science degree from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
