Dr Silas Obukosia

Dr Silas Obukosia is the Principal Programme Officer, African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Africa Biosafety Network of Expertise and a Coordinator of AUDA-NEPAD Regional Office for Eastern Africa based in Nairobi, Kenya. He previously served as Principal Programme Officer, AUDA-NEPAD Africa Biosafety Network of Expertise and a Coordinator of AUDA-NEPAD Kampala, Uganda. Prior to joining AUDA-NEPAD, Dr Obukosia was the Director of Regulatory Affairs with Africa Harvest International Biotechnology Foundation and has also worked for 5 years as an Agricultural Biotechnology Advisor with the USAID/Kenya.

Dr Obukosia has actively been involved in capacity building activities in biosafety among Africa Union states while working with AUDA-NEPAD and has also spearheaded various grants and research activities. He has published several scientific journals including: Elevated vitamin E content improves all-trans B-carotene accumulation and stability in biofortified sorghum; The Population Structure of Wild Sorghum Species in Agro-Ecological Zones of Western Kenya; Evaluation of relative competitive ability of S. bicolor X S. halepense and S. bicolor X S. sudanense hybrids, “The importance of dietary protein in Human Health:  Combating Protein Deficiency in Sub-Saharan Africa through Transgenic Biofortifed Sorghum”, among others.

He holds a Ph.D in Molecular Genetics from Pennsylvania State University (USA); a Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding; and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, both from the University of Nairobi, Kenya where he was also a Senior Lecturer and taught for 15 years in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences and supervised several thesis at MSc and Ph.D level.
