Prof Ruth Oniang’o is Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND), Founder and Director of Rural Outreach Africa, an NGO working to address rural poverty and food and nutrition insecurity. She has been Chair of Boards of Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) and Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education (SAFE). She also sits on CABI Board in the United Kingdom. She is a Professor of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
Prof Oniang’o has served in advisory capacity for various UN agencies, the World Bank, Kenya Government and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ACIAR, and on boards of IRRI, CIAT, IFDC, MI, private sector and as Vice-Chair of GFAR. Ruth is recipient of 2 national medals, 2014 IFAMA (International Food and Agribusiness Management Association) award for a lifetime of distinguished service and 2014 Fortune magazine’s ’30 Women Achievers’ globally in Food and Drink. Through her organisations, she mentors young people, both men and women and is an ardent advocate against hunger and child malnutrition.
She holds a Ph.D from the University of Nairobi, Kenya; a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science from Washington State University, Pullman USA.
